French White Why are my French dvds in black and white?
While in Paris, I bought some dvds in French but according to the box also could be played in English. I figured that since they looked exactly as if I bought them at home, except for the language, they would play fine back in the US. But when I play them, they are in a fuzzyish black and white. Why is this? Thanks!
France is on the PAL TV system (576p).
We're on the NTSC TV system (480p).
DVD video data is stored with brightness signal separate from two color signals.
Your player is able to pick up the 576 lines of black-and-white brightness and sends that to the TV (which can play 480 lines at a time, hence the fuzziness) but is then unable to read the color signal.
